N8 PRP has launched it’s 2025 Annual Report, looking back on a year of innovation and collaboration.

With a foreword from Professor Ruth Lamont, UKRI Thematic Research Lead in the UK Parliament for Crime and Justice, the report shows how N8 PRP has used the Policing Research Priorities identified by the partnership to support and enable applied policing research.

“The N8 Policing Research Partnership provides the opportunity for on-the-ground improvements in policing practice and the analysis essential to effective policing policy.”

The new Policing Co-Director Chief Superintendent Phil Hutchinson (GMP) and interim Academic Co-Director Professor Layla Skinns (University of Sheffield) introduce the report, reflecting on their new roles and plans for 2026, including considering the future direction of the partnership.

The report covers new research funded by N8 PRP, with the introduction of the Policing Research Priority Grants and the Agile Evidence Reviews. Ongoing projects on the wellbeing of call handlers, autism in custody, suicide risk among people under investigation for sexual assault, and measuring culture in policing are due to report in 2026.

The wide range of knowledge exchange events held in 2025 illustrates the breadth of the partnership, with events on Missing People, Neurodiversity in the Criminal Justice System, Nightlife Policing, Police Misconduct and AI in Policing bringing together academics, practitioners and other stakeholders to develop understanding, share best practice, and identify new opportunities for collaboration.

“The 2025 Policing Innovation Forum was a great opportunity to listen to some powerful and insightful experiences and research”

Sergeant Bruce Yacomeni, South Yorkshire Police

The work of the New Researchers in Policing Network (NRiPN) continues to provide valuable opportunities for postgraduate and early career researchers to develop key skills to deliver effective police research.

The report also looks at the wider impact of the N8 PRP, focusing particularly on the new Policing Academic Centres of Excellence in Lancaster, Manchester, and Yorkshire.

The broader scope of policing research across the N8 universities is reported on by the N8 Academic Leads, who provide an insight into the work taking place at their institutions.

“We look forward to continuing our role as a police partner in N8 PRP projects as we move into 2026”

Samantha Broome, North Yorkshire Police
